Essential Oils And Balancing Hormones

Unbalanced hormones can wreak havoc on our everyday life. Stress, being one of the major factors for both men and women. Under chronic stress, your cortisol levels rise, causing drops in estrogen and progesterone. This can cause menstrual irregularities but did you know that essential oils can help regulate hormone balance? Of course, the best way to balance your hormones naturally is less stress, a healthy diet and getting enough sleep. Using essential oils and balancing hormones can also change the way you carry your stress level day to day, therefore keeping your body balanced naturally.

Essential Oils Are A Natural And Powerful Tool

Hormone imbalance can include menstrual cramps, postpartum depression, menopause, fatigue, mood swings, the use of birth control pills or pregnancy. Other life changes can also throw your hormones off track. I personally like to use the DIY hormone balancing serum below, which you can apply over your neck and lower back. It can help restore balance to your body and lessen the severity of symptoms.

Hormone Balancing DIY Recipe: (You will need a 10 ml glass roller bottle)

2 drops Clary Sage

2 drops of Frankincense

2 drops Neroli

2 drops Lavender

1 drop of Ylang Ylang

10 ml Evening Primrose Oil

Directions: Add all essential oils to roller bottle and fill with evening primrose oil. Shake gently. Massage on neck and lower back area.

Lowering Our Toxic Threshold

Two of the top hormone imbalance issues are stress and toxic chemicals. Toxic chemicals are in everything we use today, including most beauty products and even water bottles. Although we can’t control everything we absorb in our bodies, we can look at some all natural approaches to the holistic treatment of imbalances. By using non-toxic synthetic free remedies, we can lower our toxic threshold, which can result in less hormonal imbalances.

Products that contain toxic chemicals include:

  • Pharmaceutical Drugs
  • Hair, Skin, Beauty Products & Fragrance
  • Pesticides, Herbicides & Fungicides
  • Industrial Chemicals
  • Metals
  • Synthetic Hormones

Top Essential Oils To Balance Hormones Naturally

I am a big believer in diffusing oils to get their maximum benefits at their highest potency. Using a diffuser is an excellent way to reduce stress and calm emotions. If applying oils topically, mixing them with a carrier oil is recommended as mixing them together is less likely to irritate sensitive skin. A good rule of thumb is to use one drop of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil for a 1% dilution.

Clary Sage – This is one of the best oils to use for estrogen and hormone balance and good to use for PMS and menopausal symptoms. It is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant effects as well as providing relief for cramps and pain from hormonal surges.

Lavender – Lavender has many beneficial properties including helping balance hormones, offering pain relief, (such as abdominal cramps associated with PMS) as well as decreasing feelings of stress and relieving headaches.

Frankincense – Frankincense can reduce inflammation and decrease levels of cortisol, which is the hormone that controls stress. It may also help with regulating estrogen production and may even reduce the risk of tumor or cyst development in premenopausal women.

Neroli – Can help reduce stress and improve menopausal symptoms. It has anti-inflammatory qualities and can help provide relief for aches and pains related to menopause. A 2014 study that evaluated healthy postmenopausal women who inhaled neroli essential oil revealed that the oil helped enhance their estrogen concentrations and blood pressure.

Rose – Rose essential oil has a beautiful feminine scent. It is known to boost reproductive health and can help with menopausal symptoms, addressing issues with the menstrual cycle. It also increases mental strength and concentration and can improve skin conditions. Just inhaling its beautiful scent can uplift your mood.

Ylang Ylang – Ylang Ylang can be an asset for anyone suffering from depression or mood swings. It can offer daily support for combating the symptoms of hormonal imbalance. It has a fragrant fruity-floral scent that calms the mind and body and can help influence the libido.

Lemongrass – Lemongrass promotes the release of serotonin, which is a hormone that can help with cortisol levels by relieving stress and anxiety. This can benefit a person if they are having a difficult time with eating, sleeping or concentrating.

Recognizing Hormonal Imbalances

Recognizing hormonal imbalances is first to recognize there is a problem. Symptoms can include irritability, fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain, low libido, anxiety, and digestive issues. Essential oils can help you feel calmer when you incorporate them into a self-care routine. Holistic approaches are popular for good reason. They are all natural, containing no toxic chemicals and can provide a positive mood set.

As my body begins to go through one of the biggest challenges it will face with menopause, I will be attempting to keep my hormones in check by topically applying essential oils or diffusing them for their overall benefits. There are many essential oils that you can use to balance hormones, as listed above but if using any oil for the first time, it is always recommended to speak to a healthcare practitioner due to their potency as certain allergic reactions may occur if using medications. Always make sure that you are using 100% pure essential oils when using topically or diffusing.

Conclusion

Essential oils can help with restoring hormonal balance while promoting good health. One of the most important things you can do for your health is to reduce stress and fragrant scents from essential oils can help that happen. Psychological studies have shown that scents alone have the power to impact positive associations that can activate the release of feel-good hormones.

A healthy lifestyle is your best defense, and reducing stress is key to keeping your hormones in check. Using essential oils in your everyday life are a wonderful way to avoid hormone imbalance and keep yourself feeling great.
