I recently purchased some Neroli essential oil and experimented with some of its uses. I found that it’s safe to use on sensitive skin, it’s a great moisturizer for dry skin, and is one of the most widely used essential oils in perfumery due to its aroma. Many people have asked, what is Neroli oil? Here, I will explain what it is, its many uses and the therapeutic health benefits of using it in aromatherapy.
One Of The Most Widely Used Fragrances
Neroli is an essential oil derived from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, which is called “Citrus Aurantium.” It is also known as “Orange Blossom Essential Oil.” It has a sweet, distinctive citrus scent that is not only one of the most popular perfume ingredients but it is most notable for alleviating stress and anxiety by using it in aromatherapy.
Neroli oil dates back to ancient times. The name, Neroli was inspired after Anna Marie Orsini, the princess of Nerola, Italy in the 17th century. She used the oil to perfume her baths and clothing, which made Neroli a popular fragrance. Today, it is the most widely used essential oil in perfume because it blends well with other citrus, wood, spice, and floral scents.
Neroli Oil Uses
Neroli essential oil can be used in a variety of ways, which includes skincare, perfume, and aromatherapy. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory that can help ease joint pain, reduce stress and anxiety and alleviate menopause symptoms.
Need to soothe your achy joints and muscles? Try diluting Neroli essential oil with a carrier oil of your choice and massage it into the affected area of your body. You can also add several drops to a hot bath and let its healing properties provide much-needed relief.
Neroli oil for stress and anxiety – This can be a wonderful alternative to using medications. If you experience anxiety or stress, try inhaling Neroli essential oil directly from the bottle or diffusing it in a diffuser. It calms, rejuvenates, and revives both the body and mind.
Improves menopause symptoms – Inhalation of Neroli essential oil can help relieve menopausal symptoms, reduce blood pressure in postmenopausal women and increase sexual desire. I have a bottle in my medicine cabinet. Do you? With all that it offers, how could you go wrong?
Neroli is a popular oil for skincare – it is said to regenerate skin cells and improve the skin’s elasticity. It can assist with reversing cell damage and is known to be an excellent option for all skin types, including people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. It is well-known for soothing and hydrating skin in everything from facial toners, facial mists, aftershave, perfumes, colognes, and even hair care products.
Try adding a few drops of Neroli oil to your hand soaps, body soaps, body oils, oil diffusers, and perfumes. I personally like blending Neroli oil with Jasmine and Rose essential oil. It’s a beautiful fragrance. It can be used alone but keep in mind that it’s an expensive essential oil (use only 100% pure Neroli essential oil) so you may want to blend it with another essential oil.
Benefits of Using Neroli Essential Oil
Neroli essential oil has many health benefits which is why it is commonly used in aromatherapy today. It acts as an antiseptic, disinfectant and an antidepressant and sedative.
Health Benefits of Neroli Essential Oil:
Relieves chronic depression, stress and anxiety, prevents infection, lowers blood pressure, kills bacteria, moisturizes skin, cures infection, acts as a sedative, promotes digestion, helps minimize acne, eases achy joints, and alleviates menopause symptoms.
When using as an aromatherapy treatment, it can also be inhaled or applied topically for anxiety, colds, headaches, indigestion, and insomnia. It can even increase serotonin production in the brain, which can boost your mood and promote relaxation.
If applying topically: It can be applied directly to the skin or added to baths in small amounts.
Using a diffuser: It can also be inhaled after sprinkling a drop of the oil onto a tissue or cotton ball, or by using an aromatherapy diffuser. (I particularly like the Aroma-Ace Atomizing Diffuser) You can read more about the Aroma Ace here.
Remember to speak with your health care provider before trying any new essential oil therapy for the first time. The oil should never be applied in or close to your eyes, nose or mouth.
Note: Since this is a citrus oil, use sparingly as some citrus oils can cause photosensitivity. That’s because compounds found in citrus oils greatly increase UV sensitivity. It is recommended using citrus oils at nighttime or blocking the UV rays by covering up if in the sun.
Make Your Own Neroli Rollerball Perfume
Looking to make your own Neroli perfume? Here is a simple recipe using a rollerball which I find is the best way to make all my perfumes as they are quite easy to make and they are small enough to travel in your purse or pocket with.
Ingredients:
3 drops Bergamot essential oil
3 drops Neroli essential oil
3 drops Sandalwood essential oil
Directions: Add all essential oils to a glass rollerball bottle and fill with Jojoba oil. Place cap and gently shake. I store mine in the refrigerator for a few hours prior to using for the first time. You can store in your medicine cabinet or in fridge but oil should be stored in a cool, dark place for the best effectiveness. Place behind ears, on neck and/or wrists.
Conclusion
Neroli essential oil is a must to add to your list of essential oils to have on hand. With its sweet and floral scent, Neroli essential oil can offer a wide array of health benefits and is also a great investment if making your own perfume, plus it’s non-toxic, unlike most perfumes on the market. Do something good for yourself, your health, and your pocketbook.
