Many people use a diffuser for its aromatic scent that lifts the mood and can leave one feeling revitalized but did you know that a diffuser can do a lot more than that? From air purification to killing airborne viruses, bacteria, mold and odors to mood enhancement, relaxation and well-being. With the many choices of diffusers now on the market, the question is, how do you know which one is right for you and how do Aromatherapy diffusers work? Do you travel? Do you want to use one for a small child? Do you suffer from allergies or asthma? Here we will look at the types of essential oil diffusers and their unique benefits.
The Different Types of Essential Oil Diffusers
Heat Diffuser
A heat diffuser heats the essential oils until they evaporate into the air. All models of heat diffusers use a tray where the oil is held next to the heat source so that it will heat and evaporate.
Ultrasonic/Humidification Diffuser
An ultrasonic diffuser is an Aromatherapy diffuser that uses electricity to disperse essential oils into the air. They break the essential oil particles down into their base molecules. Ultrasonic diffusers use water as a transference mechanism but do not rely on steam.
Evaporative Diffuser
Evaporative diffusers operate with a fan that blows air from the room through a pad or filter that has essential oils dropped onto it. The air blowing through the pad causes the oils to evaporate quickly and the air with the evaporated oil is blown into the room.
Atomizing/Nebulizing Diffuser
This type of diffuser forces the breakdown of essential oils into tiny particles. It requires a high velocity, pressurized air stream and a specially designed jet nozzle. Evaporation is accelerated and occurs almost instantly.
Portable Pocket Size Vape Diffuser
The diffusers look like a vape style pen device however they only contain all natural ingredients which include essential oils, vitamins and minerals. You just pop the top off of the packing tube and slide the diffuser out of the packaging. You then bring the difffuser to your mouth and draw the mist into your mouth. Once you’ve inhaled, you can push the mist out of your nose to get the best effect.
What Diffuser Is Right For You?
It can be a bit confusing to decide what diffuser would be best for you and your lifestyle. I have several diffusers at home but I also prefer one that I can travel with and don’t have to plug in, whether it be in my car or in my purse.
The one I have at home is an atomzing diffuser which really helps kill airborne bacteria and can provide relief if you suffer from allergies or asthma like I do. I recommend the Aroma-Ace Atomizing Diffuser for this reason. It requires no water and uses no heat and in my opinion, is also the safest if in a small childs room. (Always check with your childs doctor if using essential oils around children as some oils are stronger than others and are not recommended for young children) I notice that I sleep much better using this diffuser. It has become such a habit to use every night for those reasons but lets not forget the wonderful scent it leaves in the air.
Many of us today are on the go and we need something that is easy to use, convenient and small enough to carry without the hassle of a bulk device attached with a cord. If this sounds ideal for your lifestyle, I like the Aroma-Express Atomizing Diffuser. You get the same benefits as the Aroma-Ace Atomizing Diffuser noted above but it’s portable and the size of a coffee mug and even fits right in my cup holder of my car so I have it on the road.
If you like something small enough to carry in your purse or in your pocket, there is a great product by the Corked company which is a Portable Aromatherapy Diffuser. This is pure Aromatherapy on the go. All blends are made and filled into a high quality stainless steel device which diffuses the liquid that is infused with a blend of essential oils from plants and vitamin B-12 to help you achieve your desired mood. There are many mood enhancing diffusers to choose from but the best option is the bundle of 6 diffusers which will allow you to experience them all for specific moods. They are 100% natural and certified vegan.
I also have an ultrasonic diffuser at home and really don’t use it hardly at all due to using my Aroma-Ace Atomizing Diffuser and its wonderful benefits. If using an ultrasonic/humidification diffuser, be cautious of where you place it. I have noticed a film on my furniture from the evaporation of the water and oils. It does wipe off but it just leaves a mess to clean. Of course, there are so many diffusers out there but the ones I noted are my personal favorites.
Diffusion For Colds and Congestion
Diffusing essential oils for colds and congestion can help by providing relief from both emotional and physical symptoms associated with being sick. Diffusion allows the quickest way to reap the benefits of the oils by breathing them in through your nasal passage. Eucalyptus essential oil is amazing for congestion. Try diffusing it to relieve congestion as it acts as an expectorant and cools down both the mind and body.
If you have a fever from a cold, try diffusing Lemongrass essential oil which can reduce symptoms of the common cold. It can also be used to reduce muscle aches and pains. It is a great way to stimulate your immune system. If you feel a cold coming on, try diffusing Peppermint essential oil. Peppermint has the potent presence of menthol which is one of the reasons it’s used in over the counter medicines. This is an effective pain reliever which reduces inflammation and helps stimulate blood flow.
Mood Enhancement, Relaxation and Well-Being
Do you want to enhance your mood, balance your mind, reduce anxiety and stress? Diffuse Ylang-Ylang essential oil to aid with anxiety. Need to relax or sleep through the night? Try diffusing Lavender essential oil. It has a very soothing scent and is also wonderful in a hot bath. (A few drops of Lavender is all you need)
Have a long day and need to boost your mood? I enjoy blending Lemon and Bergamot essential oil together in the diffuser. It reduces your stress levels and enhances your mood. Fighting depression? Roman Chamomile benefits emotions and can help relieve depression. It is one of the medicinal herbs that is best for fighting stress. It can also serve as a natural allergy reliever.
Battling a headache? Try diffusing Spearmint or Peppermint essential oil. Peppermint oil should be used sparingly as it is rather strong but I love the scent. If you’ve ever had a migraine, you know the pain is unbearable. Diffusing a few essential oils together has been known to help with migraine relief. You can make a blend of Peppermint and Rosemary essential oil or Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oil or even try a blend of Roman Chamomile and Lavender essential oil.
Conclusion
Why have an essential oil diffuser? It can help with relieving many symptoms and the reasons mentioned here but also to relax your airways, clear out your nasal congestion, reduce allergy and asthma symptoms, improve your respiratory rate, promote relaxation and well-being.
If you simply want a diffuser to get rid or odors in your home and provide a fresh scent, that’s perfect too. My home smells like a spa at times because I just love diffusing oils for their scents but also that they can clean and purify the air without using harsh chemical sprays. Aromatherapy diffusers have tremendous health and wellness benefits and are indeed great.
If you are new to essential oil therapy, consult with your doctor or healthcare practitioner first to avoid any negative interactions with medications. Essential oils should never be taken internally.
